Organic Marshmallow Root (Althea) C/S
Organic Marshmallow Root (Althea) Cut and Sifted comes from the Althaea officinalis plant, a perennial herb native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. Marshmallow root has been one of the most valued herbs in Western herbalism for over 2,000 years. Its name comes from the Greek word “altho,” meaning “to heal.”
Traditional Uses of Marshmallow Root
Marshmallow root is best known for its high mucilage content. When soaked in water, the root produces a thick, soothing gel that has been traditionally used to support digestive comfort, soothe sore throats, and calm irritated tissues. Herbalists consider it one of the premier demulcent herbs available.
In Ayurvedic and European folk traditions, marshmallow root is also associated with supporting respiratory wellness and urinary tract comfort. Fun fact: the original marshmallow confection was made using marshmallow root extract before modern versions replaced it with gelatin.
How to Prepare Marshmallow Root
For maximum mucilage extraction, prepare marshmallow root as a cold infusion. Place one tablespoon of root in 8 ounces of room-temperature water and let it sit for 4 to 8 hours or overnight. Strain and drink. The resulting liquid has a silky, slightly sweet taste.
You can also brew it as a warm tea by steeping in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes, though cold infusion extracts more of the soothing mucilage.
