Organic Aronia (Chokeberry)
Organic Aronia (Chokeberry) C/S comes from the Aronia melanocarpa shrub, a hardy plant native to eastern North America. Aronia berries have gained significant attention in recent years for their exceptionally high antioxidant content. In fact, aronia ranks among the highest of all fruits on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale, surpassing blueberries, acai, and cranberries.
Flavor Profile
Aronia berries have a bold, tart flavor with astringent notes and a deep, dark berry character. The name “chokeberry” comes from this pronounced astringency. When brewed as tea, they produce a deep purple-red infusion with a rich, slightly dry mouthfeel. The tartness mellows when combined with sweeter herbs or honey.
Traditional and Modern Uses
Native Americans used aronia berries as a food source and in traditional wellness practices. Today, aronia is widely used in European countries, particularly Poland and the Baltic states, where it appears in juices, wines, jams, and supplements. The berries are rich in anthocyanins, vitamin C, and polyphenols.
