Organic Shavegrass (Horsetail) C/S
Organic Shavegrass (Horsetail) C/S (Equisetum arvense) is one of the oldest plant species still living on earth — its ancestors date back over 350 million years to the Carboniferous period, predating even the dinosaurs. Also known as horsetail, this ancient plant is valued in herbal traditions primarily for its exceptionally high silica content, a mineral essential for healthy hair, skin, nails, and connective tissue.
Traditional Uses
European herbalists have used horsetail for centuries as a mineral-rich tonic herb. Its primary traditional use is supporting strong hair, nails, and bones through its concentrated silica content. Horsetail contains more bioavailable silica than virtually any other plant. Herbalists also traditionally associate it with supporting urinary tract health and promoting gentle fluid balance.
In folk medicine, horsetail tea was commonly used as a spring tonic and as a topical wash for supporting skin health. The plant’s silica-rich structure was even used historically for polishing metal and wood, earning it the name “scouring rush.”
How to Brew Horsetail Tea
Use one teaspoon of horsetail per 8 ounces of boiling water. Simmer on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes for a decoction that extracts maximum silica. Strain and drink 1 to 2 cups daily. Horsetail blends well with nettle, oat straw, and alfalfa in mineral-rich hair and nail support formulations.
Popular Applications
Supplement and beauty brands use horsetail in hair growth formulations, nail strengthening products, and bone health supplements. Tea brands include it in beauty-from-within tea blends and mineral-rich wellness teas.
